Lighting Ideas... Room by Room
The Foyer: Lighting should help define your space, whether it's a kitchen, bathroom, lounge or bedroom. Nowhere is decorative lighting more successful than in the foyer. Big and bold, or politely refined, the correct lighting will help the entrance to your home feel warm and inviting.
Helpful Hint: When hanging a pendant in an entrance, be sure not to overwhelm the room and leave at least 2.2 meters from the fixture to the floor. Also, be sure to centre the pendant with the transom of the window if you have one above your door.

Dining Areas: Your dining area may be part of a great room ... part lounge, kitchen and dining, or a room all its own. In any case, you will likely want a pendant or pendants centred above your dining table. From casual to formal, Laurence & Dawn can help you find the perfect selection.
Helpful Hint: To size a chandelier for your dining room, measure the length and width of your room in meters. Add those numbers together. The sum, multiplied by 83 will equal the diameter of your chandelier in millimeters. Use this as a guideline when selecting your chandelier.

Bedrooms: Whether large or cosy, master bedrooms can be formal or fun. There are lots of places for pendants and wall sconces, and depending on the ceiling heights, you might use the occasional chandelier.
Helpful Hint: There are many ideas for lighting bedrooms, from wall sconces flanking the bed to a pendant or semi-flush mount fixture centred in the room. Some use pendants flanking the bed with switch controls nearby.
Bathroom Areas: There are many options for lighting a bathroom, including layering decorator and recessed lighting to create a vogue look. This way you can enjoy the light while being assured it's in the right place when you need it, such as flanking the mirror for shaving or applying makeup.
Helpful Hint: Installing dimmers on your bathroom lighting allows you to set the mood for a spa-like retreat. Consider your daily routine before deciding where and how much lighting you want. For a clean look, consider chrome or brushed nickel with white walls and cabinet finishes.

Exterior Lighting Ideas: There are many options for exterior lighting, from heritage fixtures to contemporary alternatives. Besides added security for your property, exterior lighting should coordinate with your home's architecture. On the porch, an exterior lantern or soffit light will welcome your guests.
Helpful Hint: When hanging one lantern, the lantern should measure about one-third the height of the door. When hanging two lanterns, the pair should measure about 1/4 the door size. The centre of the lamp should be about 1675 mm above the threshold.
Garden Lighting Ideas: Lighting your garden not only allows better enjoyment of the outdoors after dark, it also allows a view of your gardens from indoors. Mix lighting with a bit of sculpture, or spotlight a prominent tree, and add security to your home allowing enjoyment of your gardens year round.
Helpful Hint: Any great garden lighting starts with a lighting plan. At Laurence & Dawn, we will help you design your garden lighting, whether you are adding a few lights or an entire outdoor project. By mixing up-lights, path lights and down-lights, it's easy to create a magical result.
